Gills Bay Boy dies at Charmayne James’ ranch in New Mexico

Gills Bay Boy, better known to rodeo fans around the world as “Scamper,” died July 4. According to Charmayne James’ website, his death was peaceful. Gills Bay Boy was foaled in 1977, the son of Gill’s Sonny Boy and out of Drapers Jay by Headed West. The bay gelding was bred by Walter Draper of Wetmore, Colorado, and was owned for most of his life by Charmayne of Clayton, New Mexico. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association inducted the horse into the Hall of Fame in 1996. He was a six-time Women’s Professional Rodeo Association Horse of the Year in barrel racing and won the AQHA Silver Spur Award in 1992.
