Saving the Horse in Texas

Texas HORSE focused on saving the horse industry in Texas.

Every year there is an unprecedented exodus of horses, breeding farms, and other horse professionals leaving the state of Texas. Texas’ neighboring states enjoy an insurmountable economic advantage when it comes to their horse industries.

The operation of slot machines at racetracks in Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma offer higher purses and breed incentives that Texas can’t match, leaving the Texas horse industry in decline.

AQHA and several other equine organizations are working together on legislation in the 2011 82nd Texas legislative session that will invigorate and restore the ground lost to surrounding states. This focus will also provide resources to the many horse enthusiasts who participate in diverse disciplines. We are asking the Texas Legislature to give Texans the chance to vote to allow slot machines at all currently licensed Texas racetracks. Doing so will enrich all aspects of the Texas horse industry, and the dependent industries of real estate, tourism, and the wide spectrum of rural economy tied to farm development.
