August Member of The Month, Greg DeMint, Wins Select World Championship

Congratulations to Greg DeMint and and Fancy Diamond Kid, winners of the 2008 Select World Amateur Performance Halter Mares.

Greg is an active reader of GoHorseShow.com and is the August Member of the Month. Greg talked to us on his way to Amarillo to show at the Select World about what he has learned first hand this year in his quest to win the High Point title in the Amateur Performance Halter Mares with Fancy Diamond Kid.

Hauling for the High Point title as told by Greg DeMint…

“Fancy Diamond Kid is a 6 year old mare who is bred to be a halter horse. She is by Ultimate Kid who is a son of Kid Clu and our of a Mr Conclusion mare. We actually bought her at a public sale at the end of her 2 year old year. Doug Landon had shown her and Gary Werner had her to be fit for Robbie Rainer’s sale. Gary called me and told me about her and we bought her at the sale.

After teaching her the showmanship for six months, my wife Nicci got her ROM in Amateur Showmanship in November of 2007. We got to thinking ‘hey let’s show at the Congress and World Show’ and our thoughts started to progress towards hauling for the High Point title. Last year it took 44 points to win the Amateur Performance Mares and we decided if we’re going to hit the big shows, let’s go for the High Point. We were Circuit Champion at the Boystown show in May and we decided that we really wanted to go for it and it’s only money, so let’s have some fun.

From Boystown we went to the Texas Classic and the Redbud. My favorite memory was going Grand Champion Mare at the Texas Classic. I’ve always heard about the Classic but had never been. The halter was big and very strong and it was a great thrill. It was wonderful to have my family with me, my wife Nicci and my son, Max. I have a lot more fun when they’re with me.

We have accumulated 47 points and are currently leading the High Point by around 20 points. So far this year in the Amateur Performance Mares we have been first 58 times with one second and one third. We have been Grand six times and Reserve seven times. Diamond has been the perfect horse to haul for the title. She is easy to be around, stays sound and is easy to haul. She adapts to different environments well which is critical when you do something like this. As long as she has food and friends around, she’s happy!

GoHorseShow.com has really helped me keep track of my race. I love the stories and the candids, and I ran an ad in GoMag! but the quick posting of results from the big shows has allowed me to know where I’m at. We haven’t had anything like this before and it’s a tremendous benefit to know what’s going on and I really enjoy that.”

Congratulations, Greg!  We are thrilled for you.  We know it’s not a gold trophy, but for winning the August Member of the Month, you have won a free ad in an upcoming issue of GoMag!
