The
American Quarter Horse Youth World Cup, an international leadership
event that includes educational horsemanship clinics and a friendly
Olympic-style competition, is hosting youth from 16 countries July 3-11
in Oklahoma City.
This year’s Youth World
Cup will include teams from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech
Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Italy,
New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States.
The host country provides the American Quarter Horses used in the
competition.
During the Youth World
Cup, American Quarter Horse experts from North America will conduct
clinics and one-on-one instruction for the youth competitors. Clinicians
include AQHA Professional Horsemen and horsewomen Charlie Cole, Terry
Cross, David Dellin, Casey Hinton, Vicky Holt, Patti Carter Pratt and
Carla Wennberg along with top professionals Shawn Flarida, Gil Galyean,
Holly Hover, Robin Frid and many more.
“These kids from around the world are the future of the
American Quarter Horse Association,” said David Avery, AQHA director of
international affairs. “The horses don’t have language barriers these
kids can watch and imitate the clinicians and learn so much from their
Youth World Cup experience.”
The
Youth World Cup started in 1986 with support from Skip Parker of
Carrollton, Texas and members of the Australian Quarter Horse
Association as a way to connect youth from around the world for friendly
competition, educational camaraderie and international experience for
American Quarter Horse Youth Association members. Since then, the Youth
World Cup has been held in Canada; Italy, Australia; Germany; and in the
United States, Texas and Arizona. This is the first year the Youth
World Cup will be held in Oklahoma.

Congratulations to newlyweds Sara and Pat Heeley. The couple were married May 21st at the Temple of Performing Arts in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. According to Sara, "It was the best day of our lives...we both got to marry our best
friend!"
Sara added, "It was a small wedding with mostly Iowa friends in attendance; JR Reichert, Terry and Kaylene Schroeder, Jeff Cochran and Erin Lieurence, Andy
and Lindsay Lockwood, Mitch Adkins, Shannon Vroegh and Hannah Lind to name a few. Rusty and Katie Green came from Texas and Tim Zuidema from Florida and Jaime Zuidema from Indiana.
The ceremony was held at 6:30 pm and
went late into the night. We had all of Pat's family
there from Canada and instead of champagne toast we had iced wine from Canada, lots
of American and Canadian beer. There was even a photobooth for the
guests. It was a lot of fun!"
Congratulations to the new couple. We wish you many years of happiness together!

For the 2010 Youth World
Cup to be a success, the American Quarter Horse Association is seeking
volunteers, tack donations and sponsors.
Scheduled for July 3-11, the
2010 Youth World Cup will be held at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City.
What began as a competition between Australian and American youths more
than two decades ago has evolved to include kids from a number of
countries – 17 countries are expected for the 2010 Youth World Cup.
Each Youth World Cup team
consists of five American Quarter Horse Youth Association members plus a
coach. The youth take part in eight days of educational seminars,
riding and showmanship clinics, leadership training and competition.
Alternate members of the teams attend the educational and leadership
seminars. Each team draws a pool of six volunteered horses to use
throughout the two-day competition. Each horse is ridden at least once
in each class.
Competing team members do not show their own horses. The
host country provides each team's horses and tack for clinics and
competition, and AQHA relies on horse owners to supply this event with
the best American Quarter Horses around. American Quarter Horses are
needed for cutting, reining, showmanship, trail, western pleasure,
horsemanship, western riding, hunter under saddle and hunt seat
equitation.
To outfit the horses with the proper gear, organizers are
also looking for tack to be loaned for the event. Saddles and bridles,
both English and western are needed for the youth to use in clinics and
the competition. Donated tack is returned at the end of the competition.
Also needed are human volunteers to
help feed the horses, assist with team meals, work the gate, set trail
obstacles, work as ring stewards and assist in other areas of the event.
If you would like to volunteer your
time, have tack that you would like to loan or have a horse that could
be used for the event, please visit www.aqha.com/youth/activities/ywc/youthworldcup.html
to find out more information.
Sponsorships
for the western pleasure, western riding, cutting, reining,
showmanship, hunt seat equitation, hunter under saddle, trail and
western horsemanship classes and clinics are also available. To learn
about the sponsorship packages, visit www.aqha.com/youth/activities/pdf/YWCsponosrshipflyer.pdf
or contact Gary Conway at (806)378-4327 or [email protected].
