May 3, 2011 marked the third anniversary of the death of arguably one of the greatest horsemen our industry has ever known, the great Jerry Wells. GoHorseShow.com wanted to take the opportunity to look back at a story we ran two years ago where Troy Compton sat down with Jerry's widow, Betty Wells, in one of our all-time favorite stories we have ever had the honor of running.
Doug Carpenter is a legend and if you’re too new to this industry to know who he is, I urge you to take the time to learn about the man who is one of the most influential people the pleasure horse industry has ever known. Carp literally wrote the book on western pleasure. He has raised, trained and shown some of the very best horses to ever step in the show pen. He has won World and Congress Champions, coached youth and amateurs, brokered some of the biggest horse deals ever done and gone on to be successful in other disciplines. But to me, that doesn’t even begin to describe who he is or the man I know.
A long time ago, I read
a story in the Quarter Horse News called “Loping Into The Limelight.”
It started out something like, “A young trainer walks into the show pen
and he stares at the likes of Steve Heckaman, Gil Galyean and Troy
Compton…” At that moment I remember thinking, ‘I’ve made it!’ Just to
see my name listed in the same context with people like Gil and Steve
was a feather in my hat and I’ll always remember that as a turning
point in my horse training and showing career.
GoHorseShow.com brings you the latest installment of “On The Cart With Compton” as Troy sits down with renowned owner and exhibitor, Gerri Leigh Pratt. A life-long, active horse show enthusiast, the often outspoken Gerri Leigh started her time on the golf cart with Troy by announcing, “I’ll do my best to limit my profanity, but you guys will probably have to edit the s*** out of this thing.”
Although sometimes controversial, you may be surprised at Gerri Leigh’s deep passion for great horses and longtime love for the world of horse shows. One thing is for certain, when a personality like Troy Compton gets together with someone like Gerri Leigh Pratt, their high level of lifetime accomplishments and historic roots within the horse industry are sure to leave you entertained. We present to you the latest “On The Cart With Compton.”
For his latest installment of a segment normally
dedicated to the western pleasure industry, Troy takes a step
out of his pleasure comfort zone and into the top of the halter world.
Having recently moved and partnering with one of the NFL's most famous
personalities, battling and defeating cancer and rising above some
recent off the field distractions, who better than Ted Turner for
this special halter horse edition?
Think Turner is too soft-spoken, shy or maybe even a little stuck up
to have much to say? Well, think again! You might be surprised at
just how outspoken Turner can get on several topics when he sits down
with a fellow horseman like Troy Compton. With a rekindled desire to
stay at the top of the halter world, Turner gives the GoHorseShow.com
readers an earful. We present to you, On The Cart With Compton
Featuring Ted Turner.
