About the Cover

At Running Springs, red isn’t just a color. It’s a legacy in motion.

Katie Van Slyke enters the 2026 breeding season with two stallions commanding attention for very different, but equally compelling reasons: the proven dominance of VS Code Red and the rising momentum of First Thingz First.

VS Code Red, affectionately known as “Waylon,” has firmly established himself as an industry cornerstone. As of January 2026, he has sired 778 AQHA foals with total offspring earnings exceeding $2,041,664, officially earning his title as a Two-Million-Dollar Sire. With 261 money-earners and multiple World, Reserve World, and Congress Champions to his credit, his influence continues to expand across the performance horse landscape.

But for Katie, the numbers tell only part of the story. “He’s sound, he’s happy, and he’s still loving his job,” she says. “That matters to me just as much as the earnings. I want stallions that are built to last, both mentally and physically.” Waylon will continue standing with fresh semen for the foreseeable future. His 2026 stud fee is $5,000.

If Waylon represents legacy, First Thingz First, aka “Denver,” represents the future, stepping confidently into the show pen. The 2021 roan stallion is by RL Best Of Sudden and out of VS The First Lady, blending elite pedigree with eye-catching presence and natural cadence.

This year, Denver is slated to show in western riding, a discipline Katie believes highlights his strongest attributes. “He has such a beautiful lead change,” she explains. “Western riding really showcases his balance and rhythm. I truly believe it’s where he’ll shine.” Under the guidance of Aaron Moses Show Horses, Denver will continue developing in the show pen while beginning a carefully managed stallion career.

His disposition has already become one of his biggest talking points. “I refuse to own a stallion that isn’t easy to be around,” Katie says. “Talent is important, but the mind is everything. Denver is incredibly kind and honest. That’s what I want him to pass on.”

Denver’s 2026 stud fee is $2,250. Cooled semen will be available February 1 through March 13, 2026, with frozen semen available as well. Semen is available in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia.

Together, VS Code Red and First Thingz First offer breeders both proven production and next-generation promise, backed by thoughtful management and a clear vision for the future.
