Up and Coming Stallion Straight Up Dirty to Stand at Richland Ranch in 2025

New stallion alert! Royally bred, multiple champion western pleasure stallion Straight Up Dirty to stand to the public in 2025 at Richland Ranch.

The year 2024 could not have been better for the young stallion Straight Up Dirty. This talented and breathtaking stallion took the show arena by storm and racked up numerous wins at the most prestigious events in the country. Straight Up Dirty, better known as “Jake,” has already lived up to his name, and now, there is high demand for him in the breeding arena.

The 2020 black AQHA 15.3H stallion was bred by Beth Mallett and is owned by Jen Smith and Seth Dawson. Sired by the great, proven stallion The Best Martini and out of Another Certain Vino, a full sister to the legendary show horse A Certain Vino, Jake combines an impeccable pedigree with natural movement, making him a standout. His passage from foal to show ring star is a testament to Beth Mallett’s ability to see and foster talented prospects.

Jake’s show record speaks volumes about his abilities and versatility. In 2024, he claimed the prestigious titles of AQHA Reserve World Champion in the L2 Junior Western Pleasure, Reserve Congress Champion Performance Halter Stallions, Top Ten Congress NSBA Maturity Open Limited Western Pleasure Stakes, and NSBA Bronze World Champion 25k Maturity Western Pleasure. These achievements were preceded by an extraordinary 2023 season, during which Jake was crowned Top 5 at the NSBA World in Three-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure, Bronze Congress Champion in the Three-Year-Old Western Pleasure Limited, and Congress Top Ten in the L1 Western Pleasure.

Mallett, immediately knew Jake had the “it factor” and had the potential to be stallion material. “As soon as Debbi Trubee sent me the first picture she took of him after he foaled and stood up, it was pretty clear he had the looks and the flashy part. The first video she could take of him jogging and loping next to his dam made it clear that he had the talent, too.”

Owner Jen Smith of Geneseo, IL saw the pictures and video of him that Debbi Trubee had posted on his sire, The Best Martini’s Facebook page. He was just five weeks old when she made the purchase. “Jake had the looks, movement, and mind. He had to go to work and do his job while remaining a good citizen. It was decided to stand him once he earned his keep,” Smith told GoHorseShow. His trainers, Kenny and Ashley Lakins encouraged them to stand him at Richland Ranch with Karen Boxell. The decision was made after discussion and a trip to Auburn, Illinois.

Mallett says that Jake has always been a mellow horse. “I have even overheard Kenny tell many people how easy he was to train, haul, handle, prep, and show. Testament to that is that Jake was successfully handled and shown by four different people during the two seasons that he was shown.”

Jake has the legendary mare power in his bloodlines with Another Certain Vino as his dam. “The first thing that would come to everyone’s mind is that she is one of the full siblings to A Certain Vino, Potential Diva, Certainly A Vision, etc. But in her own right, she is a big tank of a mare, has the wow factor, has all three gears, and has those soft, slow legs and lots of hang time.

Beth says that Jake should be able to check many boxes off for different mares. “He is eaten up with pretty, has such soft and slow legs, and has a great disposition. He is also an outcross for the western pleasure horses thanks to the bottom side of his pedigree. He should certainly be able to cross well on Machine Made, Invitation Only, and Batt Man bred mares.”

Jen Smith and Seth Dawson would like to thank everyone involved in their journey with Jake. Debbi Trubee and Roger Landis at North Farm, Kenny and Ashley Lakins, Joy Wheeler, Aaron Moses, Tom Robertson, and Mike Bowman, his vet, were key to Jake’s success. “We also thank everyone who has encouraged, believed in, and cheered Jake on over the years. It does take a village!”

Discounts for successful show mares and/or producers and multiple mare discounts available. People interested can contact Karen Boxell of Richland Ranch at 217-438-9910 or contact them on Straight Up Dirty’s Facebook page.
