GoMag: April Level 1 Championships Issue Online Now

The April 2018 issue of GoMag continues our tradition of spotlighting the AQHA Level 1 Championships and showcases the hottest horses, breeders, owners, trainers, exhibitors and businesses in the industry. AQHA’s Level 1 Championship shows, which started in 2012 and were originally called the AQHA Novice Championships, have been a resounding success.

The initial Level 1 Championships hosted by AQHA were the West and East. Due to high demand, AQHA added a more centralized show in Oklahoma City. Today, Level 1 exhibitors have a choice of three shows spanning from Las Vegas, Nevada (West), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (Central) and Wilmington, Ohio (East). The dates are as follows:

Central, April 10-13, Oklahoma City
West, April 17-20, Las Vegas
East, May 1-5, Wilmington, Ohio

About the Cover

The cover of the April issue of GoMag features amateur exhibitor Kari Jewell of Walcott, Iowa and her new horse, Lazy Lopin Moonlight (Lacy). The six-year-old mare is by Lazy Loper and out of the legendary dam Zippo By Moonlight.

“This year, I plan on showing her in the Level 1 Amateur Western Pleasure and my trainer Millissa Daurer will show her in the open western pleasure events,” Kari told us. “Millissa has also started working on the trail with the hopes of making her a green trail horse.”

Last year, Jewell saw Jon Barry show Lacy at the AQHA World Show in the Level 1 Western Pleasure Stakes. “She caught my eye while watching the class, and we all agreed she looked like she had a good stride to go on to do the trail and western riding. Plus, I just liked the look of her – she’s a stout mare and pretty.”

Jewell adds, “I’m so appreciative that her owner, Dana Smith and Jon gave us this opportunity and we hope Lacy will be able to help carry on her mom’s legacy.”

Kari will also be showing her main man, KM Zip Me Suddenly (Jack), in the trail and western riding, JDZs Radical (JD) in the trail and western riding, A Certain Amiga (Alex) in the western riding and Senior Green Trail and Gota Lota Chex (Marvin) in the Novice Amateur Showmanship.

Kari’s friend Lauren Stepaniak is letting her lease Marvin. “I’ve barely shown the showmanship over the last 20 years, and Marvin is helping me get back into it. I haven’t been able to say I enjoyed showmanship in a very long time.”

Coming up in May, Jewell is showing at the Nutrena East Level 1 Championship in Wilmington, Ohio. She plans on showing JDZs Radical (pictured left) and A Certain Amiga in the western riding.

“Since I just became a novice again this year in the showmanship and western pleasure, I will have to wait until next year to show in those events. Lauren is going to show Lacy in the western pleasure at this year’s championship. She gets along with her very well, so I’m excited to watch them in the show pen together.”
