Transformation Tuesday: From Babies to Champions – North Farm Raising Them Right

Year after year, Debbi Trubee and Roger Landis are among the very best breeders and managers in the industry. For the 2019 breeding season, they are standing the AQHA stallions, Winnies Willy, The Best Martini, The Lopin Machine, Makin Me Willy Wild and I Am The Party at their beautiful North Farm in North Lawrence, Ohio.

Over the years, they have proven their breeding knowledge and expertise with the success of both their client’s foals and their own personal broodmares which have resulted in some of the top show horses in our industry. There is no doubt they have discovered the winning combination to raise successful babies that go on to win in the show arena.

Trubee believes that much of the secret to their success starts with finding the right mare. “Roger and I are particular on what we’ll consider adding to our broodmare band,” Trubee explains. “The mares must be well made, and we never lose sight of the statement that ‘like begets like.’ The papers must be good on an individual mare, but even more important than the papers are how the mare is made. It’s all about the form to function, so while we’ll tolerate a few minor faults in a mare, the whole package needs to be correct.”

Their philosophy can be seen in the progeny of their stallions. Their stallion, Makin Me Willy Wild (pictured right) is a perfect example. He will be standing for the public for the first time in 2019. “Geoffrey” is sired by Winnies Willy and is out of the top producing dam, Wildly Available. The mare had crossed beautifully with Invitation Only, and they thought a cross with Winnies Willy would be equally as nice. Wildly Available is the dam of Congress and World Champions, Only Rave Reviews, Avalablebyinvitation and She Had Me At Hello.

Trubee knew early that Geoffrey had that little something special. “We knew Geoffrey was extra special right from the start. He was the perfect made baby, and when he loped next to his mama, it would just make your jaw drop. The fact that he’s stunning and black was icing on the cake.”

With the help of Debbi’s talented photography skills and organization, we have pictures of ten of North Farm’s distinguished foals (there are many more) that the couple has raised that have gone on to be successful in the show arena.

The slideshow below starts with a baby picture and then the culmination of their success in the show arena. It is an impressive illustration of the quality of horses they have raised and brought into this world who have then gone on to greatness in the show pen. It is also a fascinating way to see famous horses when they were young.
