WCHA Versatility Stakes Classes

The World Conformation Horse Association is proud to introduce a new set of classes that will provide a venue for “Halter Horses” to prove they ride and look good under saddle too.

These new stakes classes will apply “form to function” conformation into a versatility class where entries not only compete in halter but will also be judged on their athletic abilities under saddle. For decades the perception has been “that’s a halter horse, they don’t ride.”

Every cowboy wants to ride the prettiest horse, the best-conformed horse at a roping, at a branding and that’s the concept of these versatility classes. The performance part of the class will include mandatory and optional maneuvers similar to what’s asked in the popular ranch riding classes.

In the final placings, equal emphasis will be given to how a horse places in the conformation class and how the horse performs in the pattern work. WCHA is offering one class for 2-year-olds and a second class for horses three years and over. These will be “maiden” classes where a horse can never have competed in a performance class at any event of any kind.

Prior competition in halter is allowable. Horses must be sired by a stallion that is currently, or has ever been, a nominated stallion in the WCHA Breeder’s Futurity Program since the program started in 2011. In conversations with stallion owners, they are thrilled with the concept and are eagerly awaiting to see offspring by their stallions compete under saddle.

These will be “slot classes,” only 12 slots will be offered for sale in each class, each slot will cost $1500 with $7500 guaranteed to first place in each division if at least 10 slots are sold in that class. Paybacks to the top ten horses. An initial entry fee of $1000 is paid as a down payment on a slot with the balance due when the horse is named on Aug 15, 2018.

These classes are open to everyone with special recognition extended to Non Pro competitors. We would have preferred to introduce these classes at the beginning of the year so that participants had more time to select a horse, get it into training to be more seasoned for the event in September BUT everyone is in the same situation so it’s a level playing field for ALL. The sooner you purchase a slot and get that horse in training the closer you’ll be to reaping the GRAND rewards.
