February 2018 Breeding Issue of GoMag Online Now

February is the month for Valentine’s Day and the February Breeding issue of GoMag is the perfect resource to help find those special love interests for your mares. With breeding season in full swing, many mare owners are playing matchmaker and searching for the perfect cross to raise the next World Champion. This issue is packed with the leading sires in the business, including numerous other things we know you will “love”.

On the cover of GoMag this month is It’s a Southern Thing and the hot up-and-coming sire may just be the perfect match for your mare. Owned by Amy Gumz of Gumz Farms, “Moonpie” is a 2010 bay stallion by Only In The Moonlite and out of Shesa Hot Cookie. In 2017, many of his offspring started making a name for themselves. Most notable, Its A Pretty Thing, who won many of the major novice slot futurities as well as 3-year-old open and non-pro futurities.

GoHorseShow asked Moonpie’s owner,  what has surprised her so far about his babies. “I don’t know that I’m surprised, but I am thrilled with the top lines and shoulders on these foals. You can certainly pick them out of a crowd.”

We also talked to her about the best bloodlines that cross with her stud. “With any new stud, it’s an educated guessing game. I love my Invester bred mares on him, but I must admit, the Zippo Mr Good Bar mares seem to add better trainability to the mix. However, the jury is still out, and it’s quite the journey we are on.”’

According to Gumz, hunt seat mares have also crossed well on him. “We see what the public wants. Short backs, deep hocks, and good size. Breeding the ‘typey’ hunter mares to him is combining the best of both worlds,” Gumz states. “We just had a great colt out of the fabulous show mare, Pretty Assets, and he sure gives all indication of being pretty special.” (Pictured here © Gumz Farms)

Amy has a few of his foals in training. “We have two three-year-olds and a couple of two-year-olds in training. Time will tell how they will do but, so far so good. They are spread out in a nice variety of programs. The consistent comment that I keep hearing is to ‘just get them somewhat broke and get out of their way.’  The natural talent is there now; it’s just time for them to go show.”
