The AQHA Convention gets underway next week at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. AQHA intends for the Convention to be “a place for breeders, trainers, owners and horse lovers of all kinds to get together and swap stories, talk about issues affecting the industry and discuss proposed changes to the way AQHA does business.”

One way to change the way AQHA does business is by proposing agenda items that are discussed and voted on by Committees during the Convention. These agenda items must be submitted using the rule change proposal form and all proposals were due by December 31, 2009.

One of the hot items proposed on the agenda for the Judges Committee which meets Saturday, March 6, is “To approve AQHA Specialized Halter Judges.” There are numerous well-qualified people who are current AQHA Judges, but due to a variety of circumstances that preclude them from being able to judge a World Championship Show (such as they are showing or have clients showing), it is argued that the pool of knowledgeable halter horse judges from AQHA to choose from is small.

It is suggested that applicants would apply and test for an AQHA card to judge halter classes that would only be in effect at World Shows and Special Events. Those applicants approved to test would then go through an extensive testing and educational process that would allow individuals with halter backgrounds (that have no desire to judge other events) to judge halter classes at AQHA World Championship shows and Special Events.

Generally, people in favor of this proposal feel that from this process, AQHA would get highly qualified individuals, confident in their ability to analyze the AQHA halter horse. They want judges who compare horses to a standard rather than rely on personal preference which could be influenced by their background of Cutting, Reining, English, Western, Jumping, etc. They argue that those disciplines would not want a group of halter horse people judging their events.

If you're in favor of this proposal, you may fax a short letter to Wayne Halvorson at 405-282-7807 stating you strongly approve of the proposal to have AQHA Specialized Halter Judges. Address it to the AQHA Executive Committee and AQHA Judges Committee and sign your name and provide your AQHA Membership number.

Specialized Confirmation Judges

I guess what I find ironic about this is that I would think that in order to get an AQHA judges card one would expect to be a proficient in judging confirmation before other classes. Since confirmation is the basis for everything else. Once you've lost confirmation - you've lost soundness, the breed standard, etc.

I just don't get it. First I had to learn to add 2 +2 = 4, then multiplication and division, then algebra, then geometry, then calculus, etc.

If an AQHA judge is not qualified to judge confirmation I'm not sure they should be approved to move on to judge other more difficult classes.

It's about time....
This has been a problem all along for us folk just showing "Halter" horses. It will still be the same though where as the judges are the trainers and the trainers take care of each other. A back yard person, like myself, very rarely makes it due to this and the reason I and many others no longer attend AQHA Shows.

Mother Nature as a judge
Since the purpose of breeding should be to produce better ATHLETES, shouldn't it be mandatory that judges be intimating aware of the needs for good structure required to hold up under the stress of racing, cattle work, eventing, show jumping, etc. and retire sound after years of work? I wouldn't want someone assessing horses for me that didn't CLEARLY understand those needs.

Why should just halter folks benefit from more knowledgable judges?
Do you think that people who show jumpers want judges who specialize in roping? Do you think that people who show western pleasure horses want judges who specialize in reining? Do you think that people who show western pleasure want judges who are most knowledgable in cutting? I think the answer is basically "no" to all of these. Why should halter contestants benefit from judges who are most knowledgable in halter horses when other contestants are not afforded the same opportunities? IF AQHA claims that every judge is equally knowledgable in all areas, then we all should just have to take the luck of the draw at shows. Personally this could be a great idea if it could apply to every event.

Special Judges for Halter
In reading the article it was stated that Reining,Hunter, etc, etc people would not want a halter judge judging them and vice versa. Considering that there are very few halter horses that do anything other than pose I believe that there should be special judges for that class. The halter horse body type (the type that wins) is not appreciated by the other disciplines and that would make it difficult for a judge who appreciates movement and the body style needed to be athletic to judge the halter horse class appropriately.
