The March 2016 issue of GoMag is dedicated to one of our favorite times of the year, Breeding and Foaling. Our cover for this issue features Amy Gumz’s rising star stallion, Its A Southern Thing, fondly known as “Moonpie”.

For many people in 2016, the month of March is all about Spring Break, college basketball’s March Madness, or Easter. But in our horse world, the month of March is when babies are born and mares are being bred. And if you’re not too busy breeding, you’re dusting off your show clothes and heading out to one of the big shows this month.

About the Cover

Moonpie its a southern thing jamie dowdy kelly graphicsIts A Southern Thing has made his mark in the show pen and already has an impressive start to his breeding career. “Moonpie” made history at the 2015 AQHA World Show with his incredible performance in the Junior Western Riding finals with Jamie Dowdy in the saddle. The talented 16 hand, stunning bay tied to win the class with the eventual 2015 AQHA Superhorse winner, Snap Krackle Pop and Blake Weis. To add even more drama, the two horses had a run off in the finals and tied again.

Dowdy and Weis decided to not ride for a third time and only a half point separated the two horses using the raw score. Even though Weis edged out Dowdy, the two trainers rode the victory lap together. These outstanding rides will go down in history as one of the best performances in AQHA World Show history.

In addition to the 2015 AQHA Reserve World Championship in the Junior Western Riding, he had other wins with his trainers, Jamie and Shane Dowdy last year including: AQHA 2015 World Show Reserve Champion Level 2 Western Riding, AQHA 2015 World Show Bronze Champion Level 2 Western Pleasure, AQHA 2015 World Show 7th Jr. Western Pleasure, NSBA 2015 World Champion Jr. Western Riding and NSBA 2015 Reserve World Champion Jr. Western Pleasure.

While Gumz has decided to retire Moonpie from the show pen, there is no doubt that his offspring will follow in his lofty footsteps. His book is full for 2016, however, contact owner Amy Gumz about a few 2015 foals available and a full crop of 2016 babies arriving daily. Also, stay tuned to see his first two year-olds in the show pen this year.

“We are very excited that we expect to see a high percentage of his two year-olds from his test crop show this year,” Gumz says. “We are overwhelmed with the support the industry has given to this young stallion and very grateful to the exceptional mares booked/breeding to him in 2016.”
