Makeup Tips for Mature Women with Makeup Artist Devin Territo

Over the years, when your skin ages, you lose the collagen and hydration that once made your skin bright and youthful. When it comes to makeup for mature women, the products and techniques you used in your 20s and 30s no longer apply.

Previously, Devin spoke about what looks best in the arena and how to get your makeup to hold up through the heat and humidity. However, in this article, Devin goes much more into depth on what you should be using on mature skin to make it appear more youthful and how to focus the attention away from fine lines and wrinkles.

Devin Territo sat down with us to share some of her tips and products that she uses on mature women to make them look great inside and outside of the show pen.

What are some tips and tricks on how to appear younger and more youthful?

One of the number one mistakes I see women make is not matching their foundation to their skin tone properly. Many women end up looking like they have a floating head or appear to be wearing a mask because their foundation does not match their face and neck. When you go too light it makes your skin appear flat and lifeless. Instead of natural, it will look like the makeup is just sitting on your skin, which can add years to your face. If you go to dark, you are not highlighting your features, but dragging them down and adding a dullness and heaviness that is just as aging.

In order to get the correct shade of foundation, when testing out a foundation, do not blend it into the skin too much. Simply tap the foundation on your face from the top of your cheekbone to the bottom of your jawline and try to find a perfect match for your skin. The goal is to connect your skin by blending it evenly across.

I like to apply false lashes to my clients as they give the illusion of lift and fuller lashes without the ‘drag queen’ effect. Try ones with the longer outer corners which will add an instant lift and are easier too apply. I also like to apply a peachy concealer under the eyes which will conceal any blue under eye circles.

What are some products that are better for older/mature skin?

To start off, you want to avoid using too much powder. Mature skin tends to be drier in texture plus it loses its springiness. Grab formulas that youthify the look of your face and neck. Look for creamy formulas to help nourish skin and make the skin appear younger. Liquid, dewy finish foundations and silicone based cream blushers will add vitality to your skin tone.

mature3Eye Shadow Color: What do you recommend that is classy and appropriate for the show pen?

Shades on eyes such as soft bronze and lilac brighten eyes and give eyes a youthful brightness. Avoid any shadows with a shimmer as this will actually enhance bags and could sit into wrinkles. Opt for matte shadows on mature eyes.

Black can at times be too harsh on certain faces and skin tones. Pencil liner such as navy blue or medium brown looks lovely on mature eyes and can be worn quite subtly when drawn close to the lash line. Smudge the line with a fine brush for a modern finish. Black mascara will also make eyes appear younger so don’t bother with brown/black or brown.

mature 5Lip Color: What are some lip products that you suggest?

As you age, you lose definition in your lips, to appear more youthful, you’ll want to wear a lipstick that adds fullness. A dark color does just the opposite, making your lips look and appear smaller, less plump, and less highlighted. Instead choose something in a mauve or natural pink tone. Adding a layer of gloss is helpful as well. Many women feel like they are too old to wear lip gloss, but a shiny finish will actually add a youthful plumpness.

If you decide to go dark and are concerned about looking older, stay away from something with a heavier texture or matte finish because it will lay flat on the lips. Use a sheer and hydrating formula or a lip stain.

BEFORE

makeup beforeCheek Color: What are some colors that will add youthfulness to the face?

It is important that you add some color to cheeks because your skin tone could possibly be looking slightly sallow. Achieve this by popping a pretty pink or peach toned blush onto cheeks but avoid shimmer as it may settle into lines. A good trick is to apply a makeup primer before the foundation to achieve a smoother, younger look. Instead of using a powder blusher you could opt for a creme which will also give the appearance of a young youthful glow.

AFTER

makeup afterHow can Select ladies minimize wrinkles?

Some women mistakenly draw attention to the fine lines and wrinkles around their eyes by overdoing the area with makeup. Wrinkles become more noticeable as the makeup settles and cakes into lines. Remember less is more. Many women with wrinkles make the mistake of trying to cover them with heavy foundations and powders. A face full of heavy foundation only highlights wrinkles. Use a light moisture rich foundation. I love NARS Sheer Glow foundation on mature women. This foundation is extremely blendable and also photographs beautifully.

Adopt a great skincare routine

More important than any makeup routine is a good skincare routine. Once you get your skin in tip top condition you’ll find you need less makeup. With age, skin becomes drier, making wrinkles stand out more. Bring that moisture back to fight the fine lines. I like to use Embroylisse Lait-Crème Concentrè moisturizer on my clients. After you moisturize smooth on a primer that is silicone based. Applying a primer with a silicone base is the key to softening fine lines, wrinkles and uneven texture.

Play up your eyes

Highlighting eyes is one trick I use to draw the focus away from wrinkles. Neutral colors work best. Use light shades on your lid and soft neutrals in the crease of your eyes.

Overall, makeup is about expressing ourselves. It helps complete you look in and out of the show pen. No matter how young or old you is its important to have fun with your makeup and use the products that you love.
